Gandhi Samaj Of South Gujarat – President’s Message

Gandhi Samaj of South Gujarat was established in the summer of 1989 when we had our first annual picnic, followed by a successful Diwali function. We have never looked back since then. Every year, with the dedicated and innovative efforts of the executive committee members, we have been hosting the two most popular events.

At the annual picnic, the members, their family and friends come together to socialize, for fun, games, and of course for delicious food. The adults play a variety of games including badminton, cricket, volley ball, tug of war, antakshari, board games and so on. The children participate enthusiastically in kid’s games that include 50 yards dash, balloon toss, lemon & spoon dash, three legged race, treasure hunt, tug of war etc. Gandhi Samaj usually provides snacks tea/coffee, soft drinks and meal items that include Vaghareli Khichdi, Vegan Bataka Shaak, Chaas (curd) and Pickles.
However, the ambiance is very joyous and unique when members bring their own food and share with others. Obviously, the success of the picnic depends on the enthusiasm and participation of all.

Members share the joy of Deepavali, a grand traditional festival of lights, with their kith and kin at the annual Diwali function. The attendance had been tremendous and encouraging. Over the years, the wonderful cultural program has provided a platform to many talented artists at all age levels. For the entertainment program, they take the opportunity to develop or show-case their talents by making skillful artistic contributions such as Songs, Dances, Jokes, Mimicry, a Comedy or Drama Skit etc. The youth as well as the newly wed couples contribute by participating in the fashion show.

At both functions, the children, adults and senior citizens participate in the cultural programs, socialize and so on. The retired recollect their past, rekindle their relations, and remind us of the cultural heritage. If we stop these activities, it would be a great disservice to our community and especially to our respected elders.

Over the years, there has been a steady growth in our community, the tri-state area. It has become a special mini-project to maintain our address database. Usually, there are many changes, additions and deletions. For any inadvertent errors or omissions of names, addresses and any pertinent information. We apologize most sincerely.

I take this opportunity and thank all the area representatives, committee and non-committee members for their exemplary efforts in helping Summer Picnics, Diwali functions, Cultural programs, and maintaining the address database and publication of the directory. Also, I want to convey my heart felt thanks to all those members who have made noteworthy contributions and donations.Their support and encouragement has been a very significant factor in motivating us to host the two popular events every year.

With the support of all our well wishers, active members and new generations, I hope and pray we continue to serve our community from strength to strength. It is our dream that we expand upon the foundation that has been laid over the years and take Gandhi Samaj to next higher level with more activities, maintain and increase awareness of our deep cultural heritage in the new millennium. I am sure that with the help of talented and energetic members, fresh ideas, and community resources, our goals can be achieved.

May God bless you and guide you in all your constructive positive endeavors.
I wish you all a happy, healthy, prosperous, peaceful, divine life.

Rajen I. Ghayal – President.
